Mission: To provide optimal medical care to the student athletes of Cecil College through preventative measures, acute emergency and non-emergency attention, rehabilitative measures, injury/illness management, and education. Oversee the daily administration and operation of the Cecil Community College Sports Medicine facilities. Provide individual support and personal attention as a liaison, between the student athlete and the medical community and assure the highest possible quality medical attention per student athlete in the area.
Philosophy: The philosophy of the athletic trainer orbits around the central idea that Prevention is the best medicine. Consequently, it is in your best interest, as well as in that of the Athletic Trainer, to provide access to any information regarding optimizing performance and any of the following topics: nutrition, fluid replacement, supplementation, strength and conditioning issues, some psychological issues, any medical issues, and all related areas. It is your responsibility to inquire about consultation in any of the aforementioned topics. All issues will be handled with the utmost respect for trainer-patient confidentiality.
Major Concepts: The following concepts are the basis for practice in the CCC Sports Medicine program. These key concepts are crucial in the maintenance of the high standards of practice and care for our student athlete population.
1. Do no harm: This is the Hippocratic Oath taken by medical professionals in their practice. Evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and further measures will be directed towards safe healing and return to function. You will never be placed in a situation in which your injury or condition may worsen.
2. Confidentiality: All medical records, discussions, and content regarding your injury or condition shall be protected with the utmost confidentiality. The trainer-patient relationship shall be maintained at all times, unless permission is granted to disclose any pertinent information to those with your medical interest in mind. This is your right as a patient under the Athletic Trainers care, and you, as well, must work to maintain this level of confidentiality. Individuals who may have a medical interest include: athletic training staff, team physician, personal physician, coaching staff, and select administrators. In certain cases, it may be proper to notify parents, roommates, or other significant caregivers. It is never acceptable for the media, scouts, other coaches, fans, or other outsiders to be made aware of your medical information.
3. Criteria for Return To Play: As stated above, if you are limited or restricted from play as per the Athletic Trainer or a physician, there is no discussion, negotiations, or bargaining. These qualified medical professionals have special training in the determination of when you can and cant play safely. Once more, you are to be cleared to play only by the athletic trainer or a physician. Additionally, if you are held out by a physician, only that physician or our team physician may grant medical clearance. Please provide all necessary documentation in this event.
4. Education: It is in the best interest of yourself, as well as the Athletic Training staff, to attain as much information as possible regarding your injury, condition, or rehabilitative procedure. The Training Room door is always open for inquiries, and ALL QUESTIONS ARE APPROPRIATE. Knowledge is power, and education may be the best means for preventing an injury before it occurs. Make it your responsibility as the Athletic Training staff has made it theirs.
Respect: The athletic department, as well as the College,
could only optimally function as a team. Subsequently, this
team effort could not be possible without the respect of all
persons and entities involved. Please be respectful to YOUR
trainer, coaches, administrators, officials, teammates, peer
athletes, college faculty, training room and equipment, athletic
fields and courts, offices, locker rooms, and decisions made
by your athletic staff. Everything the Athletic Trainer does
is with your health and best interest in mind.
