Cecil Men's Soccer Team Looking for a Playoff Run in 2009

The Cecil Men's Soccer Team will take the field in 2009 with five returning players and a desire to make an October playoff run. The program is as strong as ever with August scrimmages lined up with Div. III programs Penn-State (Harrisburg) and Gallaudet. The teams Home Games will be temporarily re-located to West Nottingham Academy while the new sports complex (including a new game field with all natural grass) is being completed.

Led by third-year coach Scott Welch the season will officially open on Saturday Aug. 29th when the Men's Soccer program will take on Del-Tech (Terry Campus). Cecil beat non-conference Del-Tech (Terry) on their home field last season by a score of 3-2.

The conference schedule will open on Wed. Sept. 2nd against College of Southern Maryland who was undefeated last season (18-0-1). Cecil held tough for the first half on the road against this perennial conference contender only to loose 6-0 at the final. Home games (played at West Nottingham Academy) of note this season include a Sept. 9th match up vs. Harford who beat Cecil last year on their home field with a lone goal at the 88th min. mark. That 1-0 loss ended as a tropical storm was bearing down on the Harford Campus. Cecil will host powerhouse CCBC Essex on Sept. 16th, Catonsville on Oct. 3rd, and look to avenge an overtime loss vs. Howard on Oct. 7th.

Cecil Men's Soccer will play their first away match at Prince George's on Sept. 12th. Cecil is coming off a 6-8-2 (3-7-2 MD Juco XX) season with a 10th place finish in conference. The 2009 Seahawks return their starting Goal Keeper, sophomore Roland Beck and four other key members of the 2008 squad (Danny Gartland, Scott Crawford, T.J. Thompson, and Vlad Andersen). Roland was a contender for the All Conference Goalie award for the 2008 season.

Information about Cecil Seahawk Men's Soccer can be tracked on the Cecil College website and information on the conference can be found at www.mdjuco.org.
