Jason McCarthy Signs with Cecil Soccer

Jason McCarthy

Rising Sun High School senior Jason McCarthy has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men’s soccer at Cecil College. McCarthy, an all-county striker and captain for the Tigers, scored both of his team’s goals in its 3-2 loss in the second round of the region tournament. “I know a lot of people on the team at Cecil and have played with them for years,” he said. “Watching a few games last year got me interested, since it seemed like the players loved it here.” McCarthy is unsure of his career aspirations at this point and intends to major in general studies. He is looking to excel in the classroom and on the field and would like to play soccer as long as possible. “Cecil is a great place for me to start out, and hopefully this will get some four-year colleges to look at me,” said McCarthy. “I would really like to continue my career after Cecil because I love to play soccer and have been told that I am pretty good at it.”

Mike Seydell Signs with Cecil Soccer

Mike Seydell

2005 Cecil County Player of the Year and all-state forward Mike Seydell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's soccer at Cecil College. Seydell, a 2006 graduate of Rising Sun High School where his mother Leslie is the girls' soccer coach, spent one semester at York College but did not play there. He transferred to Cecil in January 2007 and his decision to join the Seahawks was influenced by some of the program's recent signings, including Eric Harrington of North East High School. "Some of the better players in Cecil County are coming here," said Seydell. "I played against Eric for three years and have a lot of respect for him. We both went to another college at first and have come back home to start over." Seydell, who is majoring in general studies at Cecil, has two years of junior college soccer eligibility remaining and wants to leave his mark on the program. "I want to help build a program here and get people to say 'Cecil is really good, so we should go play there.' "

North East High school products Eric Harrington and Fred Sexton will be teammates once again in fall 2008 at Cecil College. Harrington returns to Cecil County after spending a semester at NCAA Division II Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va., where he played one season for the Rams. An all-state forward in his senior season at North East, he is looking forward to playing back home with many of his friends. Harrington plans to study nursing at Cecil.

Sexton, who will graduate from high school in the spring, plans to major in engineering. He was a 2007 all-county midfielder for the Indians who advanced to the regional finals. Sexton has already experienced a taste of coursework at Cecil by participating in the Senior Waiver program which allows high school students to take classes at the college. “I come to Cecil College in the morning, and then I go to high school in the afternoon,” said Sexton. “It has helped me a lot by giving me a feel for the college. I think I am going to like it.”
