Cecil College partners with IECC for apprenticeships

NORTH EAST, MD: Cecil College is partnering with Independent Electrical Contractors Chesapeake (IECC) to offer a four-year apprenticeship program beginning in Spring 2025.
This intensive four-year electrical apprenticeship program is designed to provide electrical apprentices with the necessary theory and practical training to earn electrician status. Throughout the program, apprentices work full-time and attend classes two nights per week, providing the 8,000 hours of on-the-job and classroom training required for the journeyman electrician license.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship Training recognizes the curriculum, and students receive nationally recognized credentials as a Journeyman Electrician upon completing the four-year electrical program. There will be new cohorts beginning the training each fall semester.
“This program represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing demand for skilled electricians in our region,” said Miles Dean, Ed.D., Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Cecil College. “By combining classroom instruction with hands-on training and paid employment, we’re giving students the opportunity to build a rewarding career while supporting the workforce needs of local industries.”
IECC has partnerships with Germanna Community College and the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) in Richmond – and will begin working with Cecil College.
“IEC Chesapeake is excited about the opportunity to expand the organization’s footprint further north into Maryland. For the last 40-plus years, the organization has been offering the electrical apprenticeship program in Maryland. As a partner with Cecil College, we are pleased to offer a Four-Year State and Federally Approved Electrical Apprenticeship Program to Electrical Contractors and residents looking to enter the electrical industry in the Cecil and Harford Counties in Maryland in addition to New Castle County, DE. This program includes hands on training as well as exposure to all aspects of the electrical industry including residential, commercial, and industrial. Also included in this program is exposure to emerging technology such as solar, electric vehicle charging, low voltage, and systems,” said Grant Shmelzer CEO/Executive Director IECC.
This program will launch for the fall 2025 academic year. For more information visit:
