NORTH EAST, Md. – When it comes to creating scholarships, the Gordon O. Mortenson Memorial Scholarship is a home run for student-athletes at Cecil College. The Cecil College Foundation is proud to promote a recently established scholarship that benefits a member of the Seahawks baseball team.

Gordon “Gord” Mortenson was an avid sports fan who played baseball and football in Kane, Pa., during his youth. As an adult living on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Jamestown, N.Y., he passed his love of baseball on to the next generation by volunteering countless hours of his time to manage and coach youth baseball programs.

“Some of my dad’s proudest moments on the baseball diamond included coaching the West Ellicott Phillies Little League team (ages 11-13) to two consecutive undefeated seasons along with guiding players from the Southwestern Blues, a Babe Ruth baseball team (ages 13-15), to compete for the New York State championship. With the support of the love of his life of 63 years, Jean Mortenson, he taught these young athletes that education was just as important as sports,” said Mark Mortenson, son of Gordon Mortenson.

Gordon Mortenson graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Forestry. In 1957, he worked for National Fuel Gas Company for 36 years, retiring in 1984 as superintendent for Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania. Gordon Mortenson passed away on September 12, 2020.

This endowed scholarship was created in Gordon Mortenson’s memory by Jean Mortenson with help from their daughter Heidi and son Mark to allow student-athletes to attend Cecil College and play baseball.

The annual deadline to apply for this scholarship is April 30. Being an endowed scholarship, the funding amount varies based on financial returns on the investment.
