New scholarship benefits nursing students

NORTH EAST, Md. – The Cecil College Foundation has announced the creation of the George and Mary Benvegno Scholarship that supports a Cecil College student seeking a degree in nursing. This endowed scholarship is merit-based as the recipient must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
George and Mary Benvegno have been tremendously active within the Cecil County community their entire lives. Married 52 years until his passing in 2016, the Benvegno family’s dedication extended to being long-time supporters of Cecil College and the Cecil College Foundation.
George Benvegno was the President of Colonial Metals, Inc., in Elkton, Md., and a member of the International Precious Metals Institute. He was a charter member and served on the Board of Directors of the Cecil Business Leaders. He was instrumental in helping to bring Harford Family Group to Cecil County and was a charter member of Baynet Bank.
A spiritual man, he was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish, where he participated in the choir for Immaculate Conception Church and St. Jude Catholic Church. As a member of the Rotary Club of Elkton, where he was a former president, George Benvegno was involved in charitable work that supported local initiatives.
In the community, George Benvegno served on the Cecil College Foundation Board for nine years. He held numerous club memberships including the Elk River Yacht Club, North East River Yacht Club, and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Springfield, Pa.
