About the Program

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the entry-level certification to begin working in the Emergency Medical Services field. This course is expected to be taken concurrently with Emergency Medical Technician – Lab and Emergency Medical Technician – Field Experience courses. This course offers didactic learning experiences towards meeting the requirements for certification eligibility. The experiences transform the theory of the classroom to real-life application opportunities to prepare the student for entry-level perspective into the professional workforce.

Program Requirements

Students must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED®. Students 16–17 years of age may be admitted with parental approval and permission. Additionally, the majority of healthcare facilities require a background and drug screen of all students who enter their facility; therefore, all healthcare career students are required to successfully complete a background check and drug screen upon entering any health professions program.

The following are the three (3) courses that will make up the EMT certification program. All three courses must be completed successfully for students to be eligible for national/state certification.

Estimated Program Costs for EMT Students

Upon that successful completion of the series of courses, the Paramedic Program Director will acknowledge all students as completed with both the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems.
